Bath stag do guide

Bath is great if you are looking for

  • Great nights out with a classy edge

  • Relax and unwind in world famous thermal spas

  • Adventurous activities in the surrounding West Country

With a unique nightlife scene, a host of classic stag activities that your group will love, and plenty of great pubs where you can comfortably while away an afternoon, Bath promises an epic send-off for the groom-to-be. Factor in the many excitable hen parties making their way there each weekend to take advantage of the fancy spa hotels, and we reckon you can’t fail to enjoy a successful stag do in this lovely English city.

Bath is definitely a place that draws in those stag groups looking for a slightly more sophisticated weekend away, but it's also a place that doesn’t quite equate to prices as hefty as London. Arguably most famous for its beautiful Roman Baths and thermal spas, this is a city where you can spend the morning paintballing in the woods, the afternoon chilling with your mates in a heated rooftop pool, and the evening sipping moreish cocktails in a stylish central bar. Our team love Bath for a stag do and we're confident that you will too.

Getting around

One of the key things that Bath has got going for it is how easy it is to get there. It takes just 90 minutes from London by train, and the main railway station - along with the bus and coach terminals - is right in the city centre.

Bath is also easily reachable from the M4 and M5, and boasts several long-stay car parks as well as electric charging points if needed. We can help you to find Bath stag hotels with car parking too, if you prefer having your wheels close by. But there’s no need to actually drive around the historic city centre as it's very compact and easy to navigate.

If anyone in your group needs to fly, then Bristol Airport is just 20 miles away from Bath. The Air Decker bus service gets you into the city centre in an hour, or you can catch a coach to Bristol Temple Meads station and take the train to Bath, a journey that again takes an hour.

Tips and ideas

For a small city, Bath packs a big punch when it comes to things to do on a stag weekend. Naturally, given you’re surrounded by the beautiful West Country, you’ll found all your classic stag activities in and around Bath: Paintballing, Quad Biking, Clay Pigeon Shooting - just let us know what you want to do and we’ll advise on the best venues.

Time for a very brief history lesson. Bath gets its name from the Roman Baths that were built here from 60AD, because of the health-giving mineral waters in the vicinity. The original baths can be visited, along with many other Roman archaeological sites, but for a more modern take, you and the boys can spend a few hours at the famous Thermae Bath Spa. This is Britain’s only natural, mineral, thermal spa, and it's absolutely stunning. You’ll need to book in advance because it is seriously popular. The key attraction is the heated rooftop pool which gives breathtaking views across the city, but you can also get massages and treatments here. After all, why should only the hen groups get to be pampered?

So we've established that if you want to relax, Bath has got you covered. But if you're looking for some thrills instead, the city still has plenty on offer. For one thing, there’s the brilliant Escape Room at the House of Frankenstein in the city centre. Mary Shelly finished writing Frankenstein, an early example of science fiction, while living in Bath, and groups of up to six people can put their wits to the test trying to escape from the mad scientist Victor Frankenstein’s attic lair. Stag groups can also arrange for a bottle of booze to be waiting for them on arrival, and can book private use of Bloody Mary’s Bar for a few drinks afterwards, to celebrate their successful escape.

Bath is a truly lovely city to walk around, which is why we recommend you get your stroll on as much as possible. Seriously, skip the taxis and buses and keep your eyes open for beautiful sights like The Royal Crescent, and the spectacular Great Pulteney Street. Another side to the city can be admired from the River Avon, and you can hire canoes, or do a little Punting, along this scenic waterway.

Lastly, one of the best stag do experiences in Bath and one that gets a lot of interest from our groups is the West Country Games Day. It’s a brilliant icebreaker for groups that don’t know each other too well yet, and is bound to generate loads of laughs in the pub afterwards. Fancy dress is encouraged for activities like welly-wanging, the cider run, and drunken skittles. Get stuck into some good wholesome fun.

Nightlife

Bath offers stag groups an attractive mix of sophisticated, trendy bars, traditional pubs for sports fans and real ale enthusiasts, spacious beer gardens for summery days, and a small but sparky club scene. This is not a big city though, so not all venues welcome large groups of lads. We recommend that you read our stag do nightlife guide for Bath to ensure that your evening plans run like clockwork.

Let’s start with sports pubs, because we know that stag groups often want to catch the footie or rugby if their team is in action over the weekend. Two of the best sports pubs in Bath are Belushi’s on Green Street, and the Assembly Inn on Alfred Street, the latter of which boasts a courtyard garden and a couple of pool tables. Never miss a moment of the action with these big and lively sports-viewing venues.

One of our absolute favourite pubs in Bath is the historic freehouse and music venue, The Bell Inn, on the edge of the city centre. Here you can enjoy a slate of real ales while being warmed by an open fire, nod your heads to live music at their regular open mic slots in the back bar, and chow down on delicious woodfired pizza. It’s a community-owned pub, so every beer bought is money that’s very well-spent.

Another great choice is the Ale House, an intimate city centre corner pub where the landlord has a bit of a reputation for close-up magic. They put on a free show every Friday and Saturday evening that’s worth checking out if you want to do something a little bit different. Similar magical shenanigans are on offer at the quirky Sleight Bar.

The Bath Brewhouse on James St West, with its very own microbrewery, has in our opinion got one of the best beer gardens in Bath, and there’s another really good one at the Hare & Hounds, where you'll be met with fabulous food and drink, friendly service, and unrivalled views over the local countryside. In short, you’re spoilt for choice for great pubs in this city, with riverside views, sun-splashed terraces, and ace country settings all available.

Bath also has lots of swish cocktail bars where the mixologists will prepare your concoctions in style. Expect good tunes, a well-dressed clientele, and an atmosphere that will keep you sticking around for a while at venues such as Fidel’s Rum Bar (a large own-blend salted caramel rum on the rocks, anyone?) and the Dark Horse Bar. The latter describes itself as ' a relaxed and discerning drinking den' serving classic and contemporary cocktails in an antique decor. Another top cocktail bar, more mainstream and as such always a popular one for Bath stag do’s, is Revolution - they also do very good food, so let us know if you’d like us to book you and the boys in for a meal to line the stomach at the start of the night.

Not everyone is content to head back to their hotel come closing time, and Bath has a handful of excellent late-night venues that are worth checking out. Moles is a student favourite, with regular inhouse club nights that focus on 80s, 90s and 00s chart hits, covering the cheesiest of cheese, but also rock and hip-hop. We think it's the place to come if you want to throw some questionable shapes into the early hours. The Second Bridge is a small club underneath the Earl Bar, a cosy cocktail and sheesha joint, popular with hen parties, and boasting a very cool outdoor terrace.

FAQs

Is Bath good for a stag do?

Bath is a unique and exciting destination for a stag weekend. Whilst it's not as big or raucous as its neighbour Bristol down the road, it nevertheless offers a superb range of stag activities, including the popular Paintball, Bubble Football and Quad Biking. In addition, there are numerous unusual stag activities here, including a prestigious mineral spa where you can zone out from the hectic world around you, and quirky watering holes where you can watch expert magicians perform. Bath offers an effervescent nightlife scene, with lots of late-night bars and a few quality clubs. This elegant city is brimming with traditional heritage, contemporary culture and green spaces, but it also has some surprises up its sleeve, to ensure that you'll enjoy a truly memorable stag do.

What adventure activities can we do on a Bath stag weekend?

On a Bath stag do you can enjoy a wide range of thrilling adventure activities, from Paintball to Quad Biking, Clay Pigeon Shooting and Indoor Karting. One of our favourite stag activities in Bath though is the West Country Games Day, where you and the lads will take part in a series of wacky experiences from welly-wanging to drunken skittles. Here, fancy dress is not just welcomed but encouraged, and if your group doesn’t know each other well this activity makes for a fantastic ice breaker.

Can we do an escape room on a Bath stag do?

Escape Rooms are immensely popular on our stag do’s, and in Bath, groups of up to six can take part in a fantastic, spooky experience at the House of Frankenstein. Mary Shelley completed her novel Frankenstein, one of the earliest works of science fiction, while living in Bath. This activity sees you trapped in protagonist Victor Frankenstein’s attic lair, with just an hour to decipher the writings of a madman and make your escape.
