Dressing like nuns won’t stop you getting arrested

You might have better legs than Mother Theresa, but dressing up like a nun on a stag weekend doesn’t automatically give you saint status, which is a real shame because on more than one occasion we’ve come back from some stag weekends feeling like we could do with a good few days in the confession booth… If only to brag about what we’ve done. Imagine the surprise of 17 guys from Bristol, who donned dapper outfits of nuns on their stag weekend in Crete… only to get arrested and spend 2 nights in the cells.

The largest of the Greek Islands, Crete is very popular for tourists who go to visit and soak up the sun, sea and… scenery. It’s no surprise that it’s a popular destination for stag parties with a party atmosphere and vibrant nightlife. Last year alone saw two million tourists arrive on the island for a bit of rest, relaxation and no doubt some rock and roll. That’s probably what this stag group were looking for. With guys ranging in age from 17 to 65 they’d planned the trip well enough to get everyone out there together and sorted out nun costumes for everyone. What they didn’t plan on however was getting banged up.

A group of men dressed as nuns might not seem too unruly, however throw in some allegations of indecent exposure and you’ve got the makings of a court case right there, which is exactly what happened. The men were arrested in the early hours of the morning and thrown into the cells for two nights after complaints that the stag party were flashing their behinds, and more. This was too much for the Cretes and the men were charges with “scandal and misrepresentation of a costume or uniform”. The unfortunate men even had to attend court in their nun outfits as they had not had chance to change into anything else.

Funnily and fortunately enough, the charges were dropped when no witnesses could be found to testify against the behaviour being “offensive”. We’re pretty sure that those guys are going to be known for a legendary stag weekend and that the stag’s missus will be ever so proud of her groom to be. We know we are.

These guys were lucky to escape unscathed and whilst we commend them on their notoriety, it is worth taking a bit of care if you’re having a stag weekend abroad and thinking of dressing up. It’s always a laugh getting dressed up and looking like idiots, but in some cultures what we find amusing they find deeply offensive. Now we don’t really care what other people think, but when those people could get you banged up and seeing most of your stag weekend from a cell it can put a dampener on things. All we’re saying is to be careful out there… because some people get weirdly spooked by the sight of seventeen men flashing their wares dressed as wayward nuns.

Dublin Profile for a Stag Weekend

If you’re wondering what stag weekend destination is best matched for a booze fuelled indulgent party then look no further than Dublin. The capital city of Ireland has an infamous reputation for being a city with many thirsty visitors and locals who enjoy tipping back the tipples and having a cracking good time. You’d be mistaken however if you thought that’s all this city can offer. With a vast array of fantastic shops, sights and countryside, Dublin can cater to plenty of tastes on your last weekend of freedom.

Getting there

If you’re coming from mainland England, it’s probably easiest to take a flight. There are plenty of destinations throughout England that head to Dublin and with fights at competitive prices, it’s never been easier to arrive in the Emerald Isle. Once you’ve arrived at the airport, you’re only a few miles away from the city centre which is easy to get to by bus or by taxi. You can also get a ferry from Holyhead to Dublin or from Liverpool to Dublin. There are some reasonable fares but those northern waters can be choppy and a shaky stomach isn’t a great thing to start a stag weekend with.

Accommodation

We always make sure our guys are in central accommodation so you don’t need to worry about wasting time or money travelling from your hotel to the action.

During the day

Dublin is a beautiful city to wander round with some great shops especially on Grafton Street and Henry Street and in the famous Stephen’s Green Shopping Centre where you’ll find a range of independent and high street retailers.

If shopping isn’t on the agenda, then chances are the Guinness Brewery tour might be. It’s well worth a look round and entry gets you a pint of proper Guinness at the end and for some reason a pint of Guinness in Ireland tastes so much better than in England. Of course you can also do all the classic stag weekend activities in Dublin such as golfing, quad biking, clay pigeon shooting and paintballing if you want to shake things up in the day time.

During the night

Dublin is famous for its night life and appetite for a good time. There are plenty of bars and nightclubs just waiting to entertain you and your stag group for the night as long as you have the stamina for it. The area that most people have heard of is the Temple Bar area – which isn’t just one big bar, it is actually Dublin’s “cultural quarter” and you can expect something of a medieval setting with cobbled streets. What’s most important however are the number of lively bars, pubs and clubs that you can find here. This is a favourite with stag and hen groups coming from England so expect a rowdy fun loving crowd. This isn’t the only place to find night life by any means, and around the area of St. Stephen’s Green you will find some of the most popular nightclubs in Dublin.

All in all, this beautiful city will certainly make sure you are well looked after on your Dublin stag weekend.

Never been on a stag do? What to expect from a stag weekend in the UK

Okay, are you reading this post shyly hoping no one else can see you in case they all find out that you’ve NEVER BEEN ON A STAG DO BEFORE?! Okay, I’ll keep it down from here. Everyone who’s ever gone on a stag do before has had their first time so don’t worry too much about being a beginner. Part of becoming a pro is all about experience and learning from others, but just like a new born deer that stands on its own within minutes, as a man you are equipped with animal like instincts which help you survive this essential rites of passage.

First of all, try and find out who’s going to gauge the dynamic of the group and the carnage. As a general rule, the bigger the group the more hi jinx can be achieved but don’t be fooled because a modest sized group can still tear up a town and be going by 8am. If you know them great, though bear in mind if you know them, then chances are they will know it’s your first time and you could be subjected to almost as many initiation tests as the stag himself.

It’s probably best not to try and find out too much before you go, but basic information you’ll need is where you’re going, what activity you’re doing, how much it is and how long you’re going for. Any more questions than that and you’ll start to sound like just a little bit of a girl.

The main areas of a stag do in the UK can are below:

Activity
If you’re on a weekend do, chances are there’s an activity planned for the day time. Some of the most popular activities you can expect are:

Paintballing
With overalls and safety head gear you’ll head out into the battle field with a paint gun and ammo and fight it out in teams trying to hit your opponents and avoid being hit.

Quad biking
Less painful than paintballing but just as much fun. Hop on a quad bike and prepare to get muddy as you trudge through muddy trenches and ditches on these beasts of fun

Karting – Speed, adrenaline, but with less bumps than the above. Fight it out for top position with your mates around the track.

Clays or golf – A bit more civilised but no less competitive these activities are a great way to save energy for the night ahead.

Drinking
There will be drinking and there will be a lot of it, expect shots and possibly drinking games which are a great way of getting people involved and raring to go throughout the night. Word of warning – don’t peak too soon, pace may seem like the word for a wimp but no-one wants to be the guy who’s dropped back early at the hotel for not being able to stay in the race.

Clubbing
This might not be on the agenda for all stag dos, but most do end up somewhere where the music’s loud, the girls are dressed up and shapes can be thrown on the floor. Don’t be fooled into thinking however that this marks the beginning of the end of the night – this is really just the beginning.

Lap dancing Club – this is one of the most popular demands from groups of stags on their weekend. If you’ve never been then there are just a few things you need to know. You will see mostly if not fully naked women – they will dance, they will dance just for you if you pay them. Unfortunately it’s a look only affair, so don’t upset the doormen by thinking that wink she gave you as her boobs were in your face was an invitation to give her fun pillows a squeeze and make honking noises…a sure fire way to get booted out. Not cool.

Casino
Most are open till about 7am so the casino is a perfect venue to spill into after the clubs kick out. Whether you fancy a flutter or not, most casinos offer food and alcohol so you can carry on the frivolities with something to soak it up.

Staying at home or going abroad on your stag weekend

Here we’re going to look at choosing between a UK or European destination for your stag weekend. With the credit crunch you might be thinking you should be a bit more cautious with your pennies, or you might be thinking “what the hel!l” Your stag do is a once in a lifetime (hopefully) affair after all.

Well before you make a hard and fast decision about the location of choice for your stag weekend, have a read through this:

Staying in the UK on your Stag Weekend

The UK has some fantastic locations for stag weekends and if you pick a coastal town famous for its beaches like Newquay, Torquay or Bournemouth, in good weather you’d be forgiven for thinking you were abroad anyway! Staying in the UK for a stag weekend also means you can pick a location that is easy for people to get to. If you’ve got people in your stag group coming from all over the country then a central location like Birmingham might work out better than trying to coordinate everyone flying to another country.

Staying in Britain means you are within your comfort zone on your stag weekend. You’re familiar with the style of British nightclubs and bars and you tend to know what stag weekend pranks you can get away with and what might get you into a spot more bother. The UK might not have guaranteed weather even in the middle of summer, but it doesn’t stop you enjoying some excellent stag weekend activities all year round. Us Brits know that the weather can sometimes be pesky and with more indoor arenas for a whole range of stag weekend activities means you don’t have to miss out just because you’re missing the sun.

Going Abroad on your Stag Weekend

Yes there may be this thing called the credit crunch around, and people might be starting to watch what they spend – but don’t assume that going abroad on your stag weekend has to be expensive. We have some great European destinations that won’t break the bank. Going abroad gives you a complete mentality of freedom. There’s no chance of bumping into the missus or someone who knows your missus and you can always blame not calling her / answering calls on your mobile not working over there.

Then there’s the sunshine. Some European destinations can near guarantee fabulous weather which means it’s not just a stag weekend – it’s a holiday! If you’re tired of going out in the same old cities then locations like Barcelona, Valencia or Prague make perfect stag weekend locations as the nightlife is bustling but completely different to the UK. Embrace the different cultures and you might be surprised to find out that we Brits aren’t necessarily the hard partiers we thought – with our Spanish friends regularly hitting clubs until 7am without batting an eyelid!

With cheaper flights Europe has never been closer and in fact you can probably get to some European destinations quicker than you can travel throughout the UK!

Staff day out Quad Biking & Air Soft Combat

As we all piled onto the coach that was to take us to the Quad Biking and Air Soft combat centre in Sussex, the atmosphere was strangely quiet. Half the office had been taken down by the flu so the rest of us felt like soldiers, heading off to battle to do justice for our fallen comrades. However, as soon as we pulled up to Amazon Events and took in the full extent of the grounds, spirits began to rise. Looking around, all we could see were green fields stretching for miles and a sprawling forest sprinkled along the outer edges. The sky was clear and it was promising to be a perfect day for adrenalin filled activities.

We were greeted by Mike, the owner of the company, and he kindly introduced us to the rest of the team. Everyone made sure that they knew all our names before we set out. This made us feel really comfortable and eased us in to the relaxed atmosphere that was created by Amazon Events. After the introductions everyone was eager to get on with the task at hand, so we all gathered in the meeting room to go through the itinerary for the day; Air Soft combat to start, home cooked chili con carne for lunch, then the quad bikes to conclude our trip – perfect!

Even though the day was clear, the great British weather had made sure we had a healthy dose of mud, so we were given full combat overalls to put on over our clothes. These all came in one size… man-size, so while the boys looked like strapping army men, the girls looked like shrunken soldiers wearing their dad’s clothes. Once we were all suited and booted and had fitted our bank robbing-balaclavas and facial masks on, our visibility resembled that of a working horse, but we were safe and ready to go shoot the boss!

The first air combat course we were taken to had the look of an abandoned Midwest village and was covered in a multitude of paint splatters; colourful reminders from a previous paint balling battle. We all sat in silence as we were split in to teams of Yellow and Red and anticipated the arrival of the guns. These bad boys were replica AK47′s and loaded with a multitude of air pellets (and as we were told these would be constantly re-filled throughout the session). With these war torn machines in ours hands the boy’s faces lit up and the girl’s seemed to fill with dread. “We are not going to lie to you”, Mike said, “These pellets bloody hurt when they hit”.

All of a sudden the moment was upon on us, “Teams are you ready? Three, two, one… COMBAT!”The seconds after that are a blur, pellets flying everywhere, hearts pounding, people shouting all around. We duck and hide, run and jump, as bodies fly from one tree to another and smoke bombs explode all around us. Suddenly a glimpse of yellow armband runs to my side and I take comfort in knowing one of my team members is near by. “Get under cover” I hear somebody shout, so I dash towards an empty shed and crouch down. Now, the sane part of my brain knows that I am just in an air soft combat battle with work colleagues, but the small insane parts tells me that I’m at war and that if I don’t shoot I’ll get shot. So as the next person runs in I aim my gun and… get pummeled by a round of pellets… I’m out! The game steward directs me over to the safe zone where I can watch the rest of the battle unfold in relative safety. I observe as Nancy from accounts screams for the blood of our manager Nick and then before I know it the whole game comes to an end. Our team has claimed glory and I congratulate myself on my momentous effort.

After the victor of team yellow, we move on through the woods until we come to the next combat course – The Battle of The Fort, this, I’m happy to say, is another Yellow Team triumph. We peel off our hot balaclavas and head back to base where everyone chats excitedly about who had hit whom and how dubious Sean (from sales) final win actually was. Back in the meeting room, something delicious was cooking as the smell of chili started to surround us. Before the winning team could relax however we were first up for the quad biking. So as the others began to fill their faces, we swapped our combats for blue waterproof overalls and strapped helmets to ours heads. Again everyone had a laugh at the oversized look of the girl’s outfits and plenty of photos were taken to immortalize our beauty!

To start off, we were taken around a small track so that we could familiarize ourselves with these powerful little bikes and get used to the steering and breaks. Not everyone had been on them before but this didn’t seem to matter as we all zoomed off around the course as if we had done it a thousand times. Everything was going fine until a couple of the team got themselves stuck and as they revved the engines to get the quads moving again, they showered the faces of the people behind with mud (much to their amusement). Once we had completed the track twice and successfully covered all the stewards in a thick layer of mud (sorry!), we were led off the path and into the unknown of the woods. The ground was thick with dirt and giant brown puddles obstructed our way, but the bikes just ploughed through them with the ease of fish through water. As we followed the instructors around they led us through the various dips and sharp turns that this vast area had to offer, enabling us to experience the full force of the quad bike.

As we headed back to the finish we were all buzzing from the rush of the bikes and were covered head to toe in mud. Mike told us that of we came back in the summer we would experience a different wood to the one we just went through, as grass and flowers replace the mud and the trees go from brown-yellow to bright green. But judging by the sadistic way everyone unnecessarily revved their back wheels, I think we all agreed the mud made it more exciting.

After the whole team had finished their quad bike session and we had all scoffed our famished faces, it was time to leave. The team waved us goodbye and we thanked them for a fantastic afternoon, they had been really kind and made the experience a memorable one. As we hopped out of our muddy trainers and piled onto the coach, the driver eyed our dirty clothes and shoe-less feet with amusement, and we flopped into our seats without shame. We all had an amazing time at Amazon Events and even though we had a table booked for an evening out on the town, I think we were all just ready for bed!

Lap Dancing Legislation

Lap dancing clubs are a staple part of any stag diet so why would anyone want to deny us the nutritional good-for-you experience that is seeing a beautiful lady showing off the talents God gave her? Well apparently there is and there’s no surprise it’s to do with those pesky councils and most probably people who have never set foot inside a lap dancing club. From those who haven’t avidly been following this great injustice against these brilliant establishments, I’ll fill you in on the details.

Currently lap dancing clubs are licensed the same as a bar or cafe, but for some reason there’s an argument to change the classification to a “sex encounter establishment”, meaning stricter licensing and making it more difficult for these adult fun houses to be approved.

But don’t worry, these places aren’t going down without a g-stringed struggle and our Batman and Robin in this fight against out of touch laws takes the form of legend Peter Stringfellow and Simon Warr, the chairman of the Lap dancing association. We didn’t even know there was an association lap dancing, but we’ve put our applications in the post and are hoping to get at least a badge and a membership card.

Both men were giving evidence last month at a hearing about changing the classification of lap dancing clubs to the Commons Culture Committee and we raise our hats to their efforts. Faced with some hard nosed MPs demanding that councils have greater power to shut the clubs down, Mr. Warr explained it in very simple terms.

“Our premises are not sexually stimulating”

What?

Even we were slightly furrowing our brows. Was he talking about something else? Had he got muddled up and thought he was thinking about supermarkets? The Committee was dubious and scoffed at Mr. Warr but fortunately Pete was there to step in and shine light on the matter.

“Of course it’s sexually stimulating. So is a disco. So is a little girl flashing away with her knickers showing. Of course it’s sexually stimulating. So is David Beckham laid out in his Calvin Klein [underwear]. So are the Chippendales. Of course it does have some form of sex.

“But what my colleague was trying to explain was that it’s not sex, 100%. It’s not ‘I’m going to go and get divorced.’ It does not go on like that.

“Our environment lasts three minutes. Their clothes are on and off before you can blink. It’s a lot more to do with personality. It’s a lot more to do with the ambience of the club.”

Ahhhh, of course, we understand now. We are hoping that because of his age Mr. Stringfellow classes a “little girl” as someone post 18, and as any self respecting patron of a lap dancing club knows it’s all about the personality.

Paintballing dad becomes YouTube smash

When I was younger, dads weren’t meant to be cool. You were mostly embarrassed by your dad and that was okay, it was expected because everyone else’s dad was a bit weird as well. I remember dad’s being cardigan wearing sense talking men that you never wanted to grow up to be like, but were the first you went to for some DIY know how.

These days dads are now invading our territory of coolness right down to dominating some typical macho stag activities like paintballing. One dad is firmly bucking the embarrassing dad trend by becoming the tenth most subscribed poster in YouTube history for his extreme paintballing videos. What started out as videos to show his 6 year old son what he did at the weekend is now something of a phenomenon with one of his recent films getting over 1.7 million viewers. Had YouTube been around when I was a kid, I’m not sure videos of my dad doing air-fix models in his slippers would have got quite the same response.

He has over 16,000 subscribers which beats Paul McCartney and Led Zeppelin and the 43 year old gas worker has even landed himself a role in the action thriller FUBAR as a hit man next year. I don’t think I would want him with me on my stag do if we went paintballing as he would be bound to show the group up for the amateur paint soldiers we really are. I’m sure his son is very proud but I’ve also got a sneaking suspicion that he’s a little bit pissed off that his dad is probably a lot cooler than he is.

The Cost Of A Stag Weekend

If you’ve been watching the news or reading the daily papers then you’ll be well aware that Britain has entered a period of recession. And all those financial boffins holed up in London’s Lloyds Tower are advising us to not only go discount crazy in Woolworths but to watch our pennies.

What does mean to the future of stag dos I hear you cry? Well, the good news from the financial sector is that you don’t need to worry about anything – there are still deals to be had and far reaches of Eastern Europe to be seen. Admittedly, you’ll no longer get as much for your Euro but who cares; isn’t a stag weekend a male right of passage?

Luckily for you I’ve donned my intellectual money cap and exclusively prepared the stag weekend budget breakdown. Obviously, this is almost entirely dependent on what your plans are, how much of a beer monster you are and how much you enjoy the sweet smell of lady flesh – not to mention everything else.

Inside The Mind Of A Bestman

If you hadn’t guessed it by now, I’m a god among men when it comes to stag weekends. I’m not a wedding crasher or a wedding planner but it is from years of experience that I have become who I am today and it is my pleasure to pass on the knowledge.

Let me take you inside the workings of a bestman’s mind, from the moment his best mate asks that fateful question to the stunned silence as you unwittingly say a little too much during the speech.

From this point on lets refer to the bestman as a creature…it just makes things much simpler.

No matter what type of person you are or however strong your character is, once you’ve been branded ‘the bestman’ you might as well order up a cocktail of emotions and sit yourself down to drink the lot – no matter how long it takes.

The first emotion the bestman experiences is a sense of pride, honour and happiness at being chosen, which is followed by many celebratory pints. However, in the cold light of day it dawns on the bestman that there is a job to be done and there is a to-do list longer than an orangutan’s arm.

What follows is the hilarity of planning the stag weekend and the best ways to stitch up the stag. This is quickly followed by frustration and annoyance at all those slack mates who won’t commit to digging in their wallet and paying for the stag do. Then there’s the bonding with the stag whilst enjoying all those naughty pleasures of stag night.

From there the rollercoaster moves onto panic at the prospect of standing in front of hundreds mumbling some very unfunny ‘personal’ jokes and generally making a tit out of oneself.

After panic there is relief. Then excitement as the bestman gets ruined whilst sleazing over the groom’s saucy sister. And that ends this stag do journey into the crazy mind the bestman. I hope it has been educational.

Let’s Make It A Stag Night To Remember

There are some stag nights that are remembered long after those who actually created the tale are alive; these are the historic yarns fondly passed down from father to son.

Taking myself as an example, there are many stag nights that I’d love to remember but that bloody beer monkey paid me a visit, equipped with an eraser belt and went hell-for-leather wiping away those lovely, character building memories. Stag nights are just the tip of the iceberg – I don’t remember anything after about 10 pints.

I digress – back to the purpose of my stag do ramblings. I was thinking, one seven seconds, about a memorable experience in a certain Brighton nightclub and thought I’d share with you one evening I actually do remember.

Nightclubs are the after hour mecca for pissed up stag parties wanting to chase the beer buzz. You’ve got a belly full of beer, a mind full of strippers and you’re King of the Disco World – nothing will prevent you cutting shapes on that dance floor. And this is where my stag do tale begins.

Picture this, a heaving club with the funkiest tracks thumping against my inner lobes. There were a lot of sweaty people moving like a well oiled John Travolta engine and in the midst of this, is yours truly and my mate. I have no idea where the rest of the stag party had gone but it didn’t really matter.

We had caught the stag do wave and were tweaking every move we could possible make. We had the circle of ladies, we had a seemingly endless supply of beer, we had the tunes and then just when it couldn’t get any better – you’re not going to believe me – our very own mini member of Take That, Mr Mark Owen, pops up next to us wearing a funny little trilby. Bear in mind this is when they had all disbanded and his solo career was non existent – a mere civilian.

Seeing this as an opportunity not to be missed, my mate pounced on the poor Owen and, towering above this little fellow began shouting about how worried he was for Gary Barlow. ‘The Barlow’ as he was referred to, had ‘apparently’ been constantly turning up at my mates flat at all hours, generally with booze in hand; wanting to get pissed, watch TV, cook, write songs…basically hang out.

At this point the Owen is looking really confused as am I, but the difference is I’m loving the awkwardness. My mate continues by saying that at first it was rather a novelty but ‘The Barlow’ had become desperate and wouldn’t take piss off for an answer.

By this point the Owen is cornered like a rabbit caught in lyrical headlights, twitching to escape the ramblings of this clearly insane tall man. I’m pissing myself laughing which makes the Owen more on edge and finally like ‘the one that got away’ he jumps the net and dives back into the John Travolta engine.

We never saw him again but it was bizarre and very funny indeed.

Upon reading this stag night tale above, it accounts for probably two minutes of the entire evening – but for the life of me I can’t remember the rest, which isn’t a surprise.
