For football it is the World Cup. For films there is the Oscars. But when it comes to beer, the pinnacle of celebration has to be Munich’s infamous Oktoberfest. It may have started as a traditional German Volksfest but it has become something else entirely. The stats certainly don’t... lie. Across the 16-day event 6 million people attend and consume a total of 7.7 million litres of beer! Now you can be one of them.
It is not just any beer at Oktoberfest. The only beer that can be served must adhere to a traditional German law called ’Reinheitgebot’. It was first introduced in Munich in 1487 and is beer that is only made with three ingredients, water, hops and barley. Much like champagne it is often used as a USP and a sign of authenticity. It is also home to many forms of traditional the vessels which the beer is drunk out of. Steins are the classic choice of course, but also a unique glass boot can also be seen on visits.
As well as beer though there is also a traditional funfair and a wide array of foods synonymous with ‘das farterland’. But let us be honest you won’t be going for the bratwurst. A giant stein of fresh German beer will be a priority and there is no better place to show your love for the amber brew than the Oktoberfest.
