Newquay stag do guide

Newquay is great if you are looking for

  • Stunning beaches with impressive waves

  • An eclectic nightlife stuffed with friendly bars and clubs

  • Plenty of action-packed outdoorsy stag activities

Welcoming more than five million visitors to its sandy shore every year, Newquay is one of the UK’s most popular seaside destinations. But it’s not just surfers in the know, and families seeking sun, sand and quality time, that come to visit this surfers’ paradise. Newquay has long been a massive hit with stag (and hen!) parties too, and with so much to entertain you here, it’s pretty easy to see why.

As you would expect from the surf capital of the UK, Newquay boasts a tonne of incredible beaches, in addition to a pumping nightlife scene full of stag-friendly pubs, bars and nightclubs. There’s also a stack of exhilarating stag activities on offer in Newquay, so we can't think of many better locations for you and your mates to spend the groom-to-be's last weekend of freedom.

Getting around

Newquay is on the northern coast of Cornwall, one of the most popular - and beautiful - tourist destinations in England. From London it takes around five hours either by road or by rail, but it's defintely worth the effort. You can also fly, with a regional airport five miles out of town - the number 56 bus stops at the airport and runs from Newquay to Padstow.

Once you arrive in Newquay, you’ll find that getting around couldn’t be easier. There’s a great bus service operated by Kernow with a range of reasonably priced tickets and routes. The Firstbus website lets you plan your journey online and find out the best route to take. You can also use bus or train to reach other Cornish destinations from Newquay, though driving does tend to be much quicker. It’s about an hour to Falmouth or St. Ives by road.

The Eden Project, with its geodesic domes, is just 40 minutes away from Newquay by car and well worth the journey if you fancy an interesting, exciting and eco-friendly day-trip.

Newquay is very much a walkable town, and it’s just 30 minutes on foot from the town centre to the famous Fistral Beach. If you’d prefer to get a cab however, there are several taxi services available to ferry you around during the day, and to get you back to your hotel after you stumble out of the numerous buzzing bars and clubs in the small hours.

Tips and ideas

When it comes to stag do activities in Newquay, the action is all centred around the sea, the beach and the coast. The famous Boardmasters Festival is held here every summer, and is definitely worth checking out if you’re planning an August stag. But make sure you book early as tickets get snapped up almost as soon as they go on sale, and hotels naturally get rammed. If your group are outdoorsy types, this is a brilliant option, and our expert Event Planners are ready and waiting to share their knowledge.

As we’ve already mentioned, the beaches in Newquay are simply incredible! There are 11 of them, making up seven miles of golden sand in total - so it makes perfect sense for the focus of your stag weekend to be the beach. As an example, we can arrange a Surfing Lesson for you, where you and the guys can learn how to ride those waves. The organisers will ensure you’re in an area with surf suitable for your experience level, so even novices can expect to catch the odd wave by the end of a 90-minute session.

Or, if you feel the need for speed, then you may want to book a Jet Ski Taster Session. This activity is seriously fun, and entirely addictive. For an adrenaline rush of a different kind, why not get competitive and opt for Beach Volleyball Court Hire. Divide into teams and embrace beach life - mankinis not mandatory - except for the stag, of course.

Naturally, Newquay is also home to many of the most popular classic stag do activities like Bubble Football and Quad Biking. And there are also plenty of awesome experiences here that you rarely see elsewhere. Coasteering is amazing fun, seeing you and the guys get into your wetsuits before scrambling, sliding and swimming through the sea, jumping off rocks and exploring caves. You could also take a sea safari by boat, perhaps combining it with a fishing trip, which is always great for groups that don’t know each other too well.

Inland, there’s Hangloose at Eden Project, which must be the most adventurous day out in Cornwall. Stag groups can book a range of packages featuring combinations of activities that include ziplining, giant swings, base jumping and leaping into a giant airbag. It’s a 45-minute drive from Newquay so be sure to think ahead regarding transport there and back.

With all these thrilling activities, you’ll soon be getting hunger pangs. For the best places to eat on a Newquay stag weekend head to the high street, or check out the venues along the beach. Newquay serves crowds of visitors every summer, so whether you’re in the mood for a hearty Mexican meal, a spicy Indian feast, or a traditional roast dinner, you can find it here. And of course there are plenty of eateries where you can tuck into the ‘catch of the day’ fresh off the boat. If you take a fishing trip and get lucky, they might even offer to cook up your catch for you. If you want to opt for something tried and tested, we can also book you a table at popular stag venues including Walkabout

Snacking on a classic Cornish Pasty or five is a must when in Newquay. Stock up at Morris Pasties in the town centre, which has been trading for over 45 years, uses the finest locally-produced ingredients, and is reckoned to be the best in Newquay. There’s a variety of fillings to choose from, as well as sausage rolls and savoury turnovers galore.

Nightlife

Newquay has been attracting stag groups from around the UK and further afield for years, which is one of the key reasons for the lively nightlife scene here on the Cornish coast. You won’t find the megaclubs or super-stylish speakeasies of The Big Smoke here. Instead, what will greet you is a host of friendly, buzzing bars, pubs and clubs where the atmosphere is all about kicking back, letting loose and having fun.

The Central is, as the name suggests, a hub of Newquay life, and a solid bet to get the night off to a good start. Close to the beach, it has a terrace and beer garden, first-floor cocktail bar and a huge 3D screen showing all the big sports games. The Sailor’s Arms is another Newquay institution, a historic pub that has been overlooking Towan Beach for 150 years and is popular with visitors and locals alike. Here, you can try mixing your own gin cocktails at your table or sample delicious local fare at a reasonable price. At the time of writing, the venue is closed for refurbishment, with a view to reopening in March 2023.

If you’re on Perranporth Beach during the day, you could stop in at The Watering Hole, which bills itself as the UK’s only live music bar on the beach (being based in Brighton, we beg to differ!). It’s a laidback venue, where you can sample a range of beers from Cornwall’s famous St. Austell brewery.

Beachside, Belushi’s on Fore Street is a Newquay legend, a sports bar that serves up seriously good burgers and cocktails alongside a roster of live music and DJs. And, always a favourite when it comes to stag-friendly bars in Newquay, you can’t go wrong with Walkabout on The Crescent for a taste of life Down Under. Chilled lager, real ales, live sports and street food - who can argue with that?

As far as stag-friendly clubs in Newquay are concerned, you won’t go wrong making Bertie’s on East Street your final port of call for the night. Arguably Newquay’s best and most well-known nightclub, it's the ultimate party destination, where you’ll be greeted with a massive dance floor, thronging crowds, an extensive bar, the best music and an all-round great atmosphere. Why not take advantage of our VIP nightclub entry so you and the rest of the stag group can party the night away in style?

FAQs

Is Newquay good for stag do’s?

Oh yes, 100%. Newquay has long boasted a sterling reputation for epic stag weekends. In truth, the nightlife scene has calmed down a little in recent years, but that just means the good stuff has been concentrated, and there are many top bars for your group to get hedonistic in.

Combine that with a superb range of outdoorsy stag activities including Surf Lessons and Jet Skiing, and Newquay should be right at the top of the list for a weekend by the coast.

What is there to do in Newquay at night?

Newquay has loads of great, stag-friendly bars and pubs where you’ll find a lively atmosphere, especially during the summer months. Popular venues include the beachside Watering Hole, sports bars including Belushi’s and Walkabout, and spacious pubs such as The Central and the Sailor’s Arms.

Later on, many stag groups find themselves in Bertie’s, a busy club where we can sort your group out with VIP entry before you head to the bar, or to the dancefloor to strut your stuff.

Where are your Newquay stag do hotels?

Have no fear, when you book with The Stag Company, we’ll ensure that your group is staying close to the action. In fact, if you book Bertie's Surf Lodge, you’ll be right next to it, so when Newquay’s top nightclub closes its doors, you can be rolling into your bunk beds within moments.

We also have beachside accommodation, and hotels a little further out but just a few minutes’ drive from the town centre. Whatever you’re looking for from your Newquay stag accommodation, whatever your budget, we can help you find it.

Do you offer Newquay stag packages?

Absolutely. In fact we recommend booking a package because it means the basics of your weekend are sorted out, and you can then add on bits here and there as you please. Our various Newquay stag packages are designed to take the stress out of organising things for you, with good value deals on activities, accommodation and meals.

Is fancy dress allowed in Newquay bars?

Generally speaking, fancy dress is fine in most Newquay bars and clubs, but having seen some truly outrageous get-ups over the years, we add the disclaimer 'within reason'. Obviously the door staff might take exception to ludicrously offensive costumes, but if you’ve got the stag kitted out in miniskirt and suspenders you should be fine. You can check with individual venues beforehand, or our Event Planners can offer advice on where they will and won’t accept fancy dress in town.
